TOP-DOWN APPROACH TO INITIATE AND ENHANCE SMEs PARTICIPATION IN EUROPEAN RESEARCH IN ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES AND TO SUPPORT THEIR STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING

Objective

PLATON is an innovative ETI project, which aims to initiate and enhance the participation of innovative SMEs and mainly of motivated SME Groupings in future and actual European research activities in the areas of economic, political, social sciences and humanities (CITIZENS priority). To achieve its aim the project will demonstrate to SMEs / SME Groupings from the EU-27 the importance and benefits that such research results may have in their competitiveness, innovation performance and long-term viability. The project implements actions sufficiently including: (i) "conventional" activities - targeting to a large number of interested SMEs / SME Groupings and (ii) "go beyond" activities based on a set of "Advanced" Services (Advanced Tutorials, "Strategic Guidance", Audits, Research Action Plans, networking with EU-27 research leaders and EC services) - targeting to a selective number of highly motivated and competent organisations. The "conventional" activities will concentrate on creating awareness and initiating participation of SMEs / SME Grouping to research projects. Under this approach, activities escalate in 3 levels of maturity: (a) Promotion / publicity, (b) Info-days, and (c) Networking days within the context of national or international events.

The "go beyond" activities will focus particularly on assisting SMEs/SME Groupings to (a) take advantage of research results in the targeted areas and (b) play an active role in relevant research activities, so as to respond better and proactively to their changing macro-environment. Overall, 15 - 21 events are planned, while more than 200 SMEs and SME Groupings will benefit directly from the project activities. To maximise its impact the project is supported by a web-portal including a user-oriented database to facilitate, networking and providing valuable info. PLATON tasks will be fulfilled in 27 months by a multidisciplinary consortium consisted of 6 European partners from 6 EU-27 countries.
