Obiettivo We present a project of action in the field of glass science and technology which aims at coordinating all European groups working in fundamental and applied precompetitive research. The success of this project could be the basis for the establishment of a Network of Excellence on glass. The groups involved in the project are already operative and they work in a cooperative way for many years in the framework of the European Group of the International Commission on Glass. The EFONGA is operating and will o perate in the following fields: basic knowledge of glassy materials, relation structure-properties, setting-up of new methods for the characterization of glassy materials, preparation of reference materials. Among the most important goals is the developm ent of basic knowledge in the chemistry of glasses, in order to create new glasses and new glasses applications, in particular nanostructured glass materials. Another important goal is the improvement of the chemical composition and production processes of glasses in order to reduce more and more the impact on environment. Also the support to the European standardization bodies will continue at conormative and prenormative level, and with the preparation of critical reference materials (CRM). The three axes of this Coordinating Action (CA) are : - Coordination of the work performed by the different groups through the organisation of Round Robin tests, - Organisation of workshops, seminars and meetings in order to promote the exchange of information and d efine the axes of development at the European scale, - Diffusion and dissemination of information on the results of the different actions, and coordination of education and training at the European level.
