Strengthening the role of women scientists in Nano-Science

Objective

WomenInNano is a 30 months project involving 11 women scientists from 9 European countries (Germany, Romania, Sweden, Spain, Slovenia, UK, Bulgaria, Italy, France). It represents a pilot initiative of networking high-level female scientists experienced i n Nano-Science who will act as "Ambassadors for Women and Science". The aims of the project are: a) to encourage young women to consider studies and pursue careers in this new scientific field (providing "role models"), b) to attract youth to "NANO", c) to network and empower women scientists working in Nano-Science at national, regional and European level, d) to stimulate female scientists to participate in EU programmes, e) to mobilize stakeholders in favour of gender equality in scientific research, f) to stimulate the science-society dialog. The activities planned are logically grouped and described in eight workpackages. They can be separated into three stages/steps:In the first stage, after establishing the conceptual framework of the project (WP1 ), the team will review the state of the art in Nano-Science, will identify and map the competences and make a data base of women scientists in this field at national, regional and European level (WP2).In a second stage (WP3, WP4, WP5) mass media appear ances, participation at open and public events (of "Open house day", "Girls Day"-type), visits to schools, workshops, summer school are planned, all these representing a campaign to make the scientific career more attractive, especially for young women. This stage will also enhance the role of women scientists in the international "Nano" community and will help to further networking.A third stage (WP6, WP7, WP8) is dedicated to communicating and making contact with decision making-persons at national an d European level concerning the gender dimension of scientific research with the aim to develop the "best practice" policies in the recruitment and employment of scientists.
