Bee research and virology in Europe - identifying the research needs for protecting European agriculture and ecosystems against viral diseases

Cel

Building on other initiatives to bring together European researchers in Apiculture, the project will gather international experts within two meetings for promoting a multidisciplinary approach to prevent the introduction of exotic viruses that may pose serious problems to European apiculture and biodiversity through the loss of pollinators. The first meeting will gather experts with a broad base of skills in insect virology, virus diagnosis, immunology, disease epidemiology, international trade, policy and risk assessment and scientists involved in research on honey bees and related pollinator species. The session's meeting will address the following topics : 1- Taxonomy, characterisation and diagnosis of viruses of bees and related (including exotic) species. 2- Immunity of bees to virus infection. 3- Latency of viruses in bee colonies and mechanisms that trigger overt infections. 4- The impact of viruses already present in EU on bee colonies. 5- Epidemiology of virus infections in bees with and without the Varroa mite. 6- Genetics of virus and pathogen city of infections in bees. 7- Economic and ecological impact of virus diseases in bees. 8- Regulatory issues for preventing the entry of exotic bee viruses into the EU. The second meeting will gather the rapporteurs and designated subject area leaders of the first meeting. Using the proceedings and conclusions of the first meeting, they will: - identify and describe the future research priorities for integrating a European research area in bee virus diseases at the fundamental and applied levels, - formulate recommendations to the EC on policy options for preventing the introduction of exotic bee viruses, and to the OIE for diagnostic procedures regarding honey bee viruses. The proceedings and recommendations issued from both meetings will be edited in scientific journal and through a website. Effective contacts will be supported by the compilation of a directory of bee scientists in the EC.
