European Network on Education and Training in RAdiological Protection

Ziel

Occupational, public and environmental radiation protection is a major challenge in the industrial applications of ionising radiation, both nuclear and non-nuclear, as well as in o ther areas such as the medical and research area. A sustainable Education and Training (E&T) infrastructure is an essential component to combat the decline in expertise and to ensure the continuation of the highlevel of radiation protection (RP) knowledge in the future. Furthermore, as shown by a recent study("The Status of the RP Expert in the EU Member States and Applicant Countries : Study on E&T in RP", Radiation Protection N 133,2003), the wide variety of national approaches for E&T requires the mutual recognition for RP courses and the acquired competencies of RP experts. Moreover, the harmonisation of E&T will favour the mobility of workers and students throughout the European countries. The objectives are of the project are to launch an Erasmus Universities Consortium which will be in charge of developping an European Master In Radiation Protection, to establish a network dedicated to the E&T in RP in order to better integrate the European E&T in the RP infrastructure of the European countries, to develop more harmonised approaches for E&T and their implementation, to better integrate the national resources and capacities for E&T and to provide the necessary competence and expertise for the continued safe use of radiation in industry, medicine and research. Assessment of training needs and capacities, review of the scientific contents of E&T activities, exploration and proposal related to on-the-job training programmes and proposal of measures for the recognition of courses and competencies of RP experts are the main objectives of this proposal.Recommendations for revising the current European Radiation Protection Course to include modern educational tools, such as distance learning will be also provided.
