Curing polyester resins on demand

Objetivo

The proposal concerns the development of a new curing technology of polyester resins. Curing of resins are done with thermal heat, UV-radiation or electron beam radiation. The thermal process is the most common in the industry. UV is now starting in appli cation and e-beam curing is still under development. The thermal curing occurs in metal forms and is best suitable for mass production. For huge parts like ship bodies curing takes too long time, because a long curing time is necessary for filling the for m with resin. A thermal activtaion is not feasible. Microwaves of a frequency 2,45GHz ensures a volumetric heating of the resin and overcomes the bad thermal conductivity of the polymer. The microwaves are absorbed from the resin, heated up and starts cro ss-linking. Over the thickness a homogenous temperature profile and also cross-linking profile is achieved. With microwave curing a separation of the filling porcess with resin and the curing process is perormed. Benefits for the product are, curing is n ot dependent on boundary condition like outside temperature humidity and therefore more reproducible and controllable, homogenous curing of thick parts; acceleration of the curing, shortening of the curing time; increase of degree of cross-linking, reduc tion of waste and environmental pollution; lower viscosity of the resin is possible leading to higher fibre content. Social benefits are less VOC emission and drastically decreasing the content of hazardous peroxides.
