Objective Nowadays, strategic considerations are necessary, concerning future hot metal production, which in the long term takes into account not only the safeguarding of raw materials and energy supply but also environmental aspects. A current strategic question, which is important for the steel industry in the European Community, is being discussed under the title of "Hydrogen Metallurgy" in view of CO2 problems. The aim of this research work is to evaluate the possibility of using hydrogen or gases rich in hydrogen in the steel industry, and to develop and examine ideas by discussing published results of various fundamental research projects and to initiate additional technical research works.
