Bavar 2000

Obiettivo

Hypertension and cardiovascular disorders are major health risk factors and significantly reduce life expectancy of the population in the countries of the European Union. Recently, the importance of blood pressure variability and arterial baroreceptor function has been recognised as important diagnostic markers and independent risk factors in circulatory disease, such as hypertension and myocardial infarction.

Thus, a nucleus of experts specialised in the field of baroreceptors and variability have set out to spread the newest techniques for assessing these pivotal elements in the disease of heart and vessels (the so called BAroreceptors and VARiability). Baroreflex sensitivity can now be approximated by different analytical procedures. The methodology ranges from highly complex mathematical algorithms, over statistical assessment, down to simpler, but robust procedures such as the sequence method.

The BAVAR 2000 meeting in Berlin brings together the nucleus of European investigators who have played the leading role in the development and advancement of these techniques. It is unique that we comprise a wide range of scientists from several different fields such as applied mathematics, engineers, biologists, and finally medical researchers and clinicians. Taken together, the scientific technological objectives of this meeting is to improve the assessment of baroreceptor sensitivity using non-,or minimal, invasive techniques. Furthermore, the role of blood pressure variability for endorgan damage and the consequences of hypertension will be elucidated.
