The main objective of this three-year STREP is to develop an innovative, hybrid device that integrates a HTS cable termination with a HTS transformer, a fault current limiter and robust refrigeration. The establishment of this device is key to the future w idespread introduction of HTS cables into the electricity network. The work proposed is necessary for enabling the full potential of DEG to be achieved and the future supply of electricity that is both affordable and reliable. The research project will dev elop technology that will have medium to long term impact. The SLIM FORMER project seeks to place European industry as global leaders in HTS cable systems application technology and thereby secure a strategic position for a broader range of HTS and convent ional electricity network technologies. Performance of the work is vital if Europe is to maintain a presence in this critical area of industrial technology. It will protect and create jobs, it will reduce impact on the environment, improve quality of life and raise awareness of the quality of research in the EU. The STREP covers HTS conductor winding and manufacturing technologies, designing of the HTS device, developing cooling and cryogenic systems and laboratory testing of devices as well as the relevant economic analysis and development of a pilot plant. The RTD activity is divided into interlinked Work Packages which focus on key technology developments. The project is horizontally, vertically and financially integrated and includes all of the organisat ions necessary to bring the SLIM FORMER system to the user market. The project has been designed to develop partnerships with the target user community. Selected users (i.e. Utilities) will join the STREP as associated partners during the project to assist project focus and to accelerate the user market uptake of the technology.
