A Coordinated Network for Radiation Dosimetry

Objetivo

This project involves two main activities to maintain and enhance competence in radiation protection dosimetry. It analyses the options for sustainable networks linking research actors and end users and it coordinates research into measurements and calculations for radiation protection at workplaces. The proposal is structured into three groups of work packages: One work package gathers and analyses empirical data for the further development of a sustainable European network comprising research community and end-users in radiation protection dosimetry and the possible role of a Network of Excellence. Four work packages focus on the coordination of research mainly by preparing and analysing benchmark exercises in key areas: Use of computational methods for dosimetry, exposure of workers to internal radiation, dosimetry of complex radiation fields at workplaces and radiation protection dosimetry of medical staff. A further work package concentrates on the rapid and efficient dissemination of the results from the project by organising conferences and workshops, utilising the Newsletter on European Research in Radiological Sciences (ERRS) and databases. The project uses the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) as the organisational framework for the network of experts. EURADOS, founded in 1981, presently comprises nearly 200 researchers from 50 European institutions in 24 countries. It has repeatedly demonstrated its competence at coordinating studies. The results will indicate the way forward for improved networking in radiation protection dosimetry and lead to urgently needed improvements for a wide range of workplaces. Among the end users of the coordinated research are the European Commission, national and international organisations, regulatory bodies, research groups, manufacturers of dosimetric instrumentation, the nuclear industry and medical facilities.
