SYNTHESIS, CHEMICAL FUNCTIONALIZATION, MODIFICATION, AND APPLICATIONS OF NANODIAMONDS AND CARBON ONIONS

Objetivo

"The project aims to develop new methods for the synthesis, chemical functionalization, and modification of nano-sized carbon particles (nanodiamonds (ND) and carbon onions (CO)). Within the framework of the project, the following main objectives will be a chieved: 1) the development of a new method for de-aggregation and size selection of ND particles producing fractions with a narrow size distribution and hydrogenated ND surfaces; 2) the development of a scalable method, based on annealing ND, to synthesi se separate CO with controlled size distribution, initially in quantities of several hundreds milligrams; 3) the development of approaches for controlled functionalization and modification of CO and ND in order to explore their application in different fi elds: electronics, optics, medicine. Due to the wide range of extreme properties possessed by diamond, ND (2-50 nm in size) finds use in many different applications. It is possible to envisage many other applications for ND in medicine, electronics, and op tics. However, applications of ND in such demanding fields are constrained by the lack of methods for de-aggregation and separation of ND into samples with a narrow size distribution. CO consist of fullerene-like shells enclosed within one another. CO have fascinating properties, due to their highly symmetric structure. However, wide investigations of the properties this unique carbon form and exploration of its possible applications are constrained by the absence of methods allowing production of separate and size-selected CO. The first two project objectives address an important problem ¿ the production of separate and size-selected ND and CO particles. The last objective deals with purposeful treatments of the carbon nanomaterials and investigations of th eir chemical, physical and electronic properties in order to develop their application in a wide range of fields with potential benefits to science, technology and healthcare within the EU scientific area."
