Understanding chemical and other pressures on lanners

Obiettivo

The wider objective is 2-fold: establish first how rare sedentary raptors (such as lanner falcon Falco biarmicus feldeggi in Sicily, Italy) can serve as sentinels of environmental health, contamination and ecosystem change; and second whether through bette r understanding of the lanner's ability to cope with environmental pressures, recovery plans for the species can be strengthened. Specific objectives are to: develop the conceptual approach to ecotoxicological studies in raptors through better integration of ecological and toxicological approaches and determine the main factors contributing to the decline of the lanner in Europe; investigate exposure to and effects of contaminants in the lanner and their general bioavailability; elucidate the relationship between residue levels and biomarker responses; assess the relative importance of contamination as against other ecosystem changes; compare current approaches and models used to assess hazard and risks to falcons and other predatory birds in Europe; and re view current EU practice in relation to QA to bring terrestrial wildlife studies alongside best EU practice. These will be met through: field ornithological and ecological observations; non-destructive sampling of lanner and lanner prey; laboratory analys es (some novel) for a range of contaminants (and testing of new methods); interpretation of the effects of contaminant and other pressures on lanners in Sicily. The proposal is highly relevant to the objectives of the Activity and Work Programme in terms of building the researcher's multidisciplinary expertise in leading-edge ecological, toxicological, analytical and dissemination (eg. networking) methods, while contributing to EU excellence and advancing conceptual and methodological state-of-the-art and new data. The proposal carries significant added value in environmental, biodiversity, health and chemicals policy, is well linked to other FP6 activities, and ideally matched to the researcher's profile.
