The Cluster-Galaxy Connection: Interactions and Evolution

Ziel

In the Universe, structure is formed hierarchically, by the merging of smaller units. Large clusters of galaxies are formed by the continual falling of galaxies into the clusters. The interactions of the cluster gas with the moving galaxies modify the pro perties of both galaxies and clusters by, for example, stripping the galaxies, and heating the cluster. These modifications have an impact on their subsequent evolution.I am proposing to combine my existing expertise in the analysis of X-ray data from evol ving and merging clusters of galaxies with MPIA's experience on deep galaxy surveys and galaxy dynamics in order to get a better insight into the factors that control the evolution of galaxies and clusters, and the impact of galaxy-cluster interactions. Su ch a combined study has not been done yet; it is timely, because of the availability of high quality X-ray data from the new satellites Chandra and XMM, and the wealth of ongoing deep galaxy surveys that are producing encouraging results. The properties of the clusters will be derived from the X-ray observations, while optical/infrared data will be used to find the galaxy characteristics. Appropriate methods for the handling of the X-ray and galaxy survey data have been developed and used by me and MPIA res pectively over the past years. Data already exist and the samples will be complimented when necessary by data from the rapidly expanding archives and/or after the submittion of proposals. My training will be on the use of large galaxy survey data, how to extract the essential information, and combine it successfully with the X-ray data. I also expect to gain a deeper knowledge on galaxy dynamics and galaxy interactions by being at MPIA.At the end of the project I will be able to assess the importance of ga laxy-cluster interactions in the modification of the properties and evolution of both clusters and galaxies, and the physical processes by which this occurs.
