Objectif EMBN is a network of 4 European Centres of Excellence with highexpertise in analyzing membrane proteins. Membrane proteinsrepresent one of the last frontiers in cell biology. At present, the structure of hardly more than 50 different membrane proteins has been determined. This small number is in stark contrast with the host of membrane proteins in the genomes sequenced so far. Irrespective of the organism, 25-30% of all genes are predicted to encode membrane proteins. More than half of these are thought to be complex membrane proteins with three or more membrane-spanning segments and carry out essential cellular reactions. Yet no biological process can be fully understood without knowing the structure and specific function of the participating proteins, whic h holds true especially for membrane proteins. Obviously, there is an urgent requirement for scientific progress to understand the biology of membrane proteins. The education of young scientists interested to tackle the field of membrane proteins is a powe rful option for improvement of current and the development of new methods in membrane biochemistry and structural biology. Here, EMBNTrain will provide a coherent series of 8 workshops and Seminars to train young scientists in the most advanced methods and protocols in analysing membrane-bound processes including four main themes: signaling, transport, bioenergetics and compartmentalization.
