Non-Conformal and Non-Supersymmetric Generalizations of the Gauge/Gravity Correspondence and Holographic Renormalization Group

Ziel

The objective of this research project is the study of generalizations of the recently-discovered correspondence between gauge theories and gravitational theories (such as string theory). One aim will be to find phenomenologically useful generalizations of this correspondence and to use them to explore the non- perturbative features of theories similar to OCO, the theory of the strong nuclear interactions (such as confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, the existence of a mass gap, and so on). In addition, w e would like to gain insights into various features of the so-called "holographic map" which relates gravitational theories to gauge theories. We expect to achieve these general objectives by facing several concrete open problems. One of them will be the study of non-supersymmetric generalizations of the so-called Klebanov-Strassler background. Another one will be to study in depth the holographic renormalization formalism. In particular, we would like to understand its precise relation wi th the field theory renormalization group flow, and also to extend the known formulations of holographic renormalization to space-times which are not asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter spaces. In addition, we expect that these investigations will serve to advan ce the understanding of ???-perturbatíve aspects of String Theory on the specific backgrounds that will be the target of our research, since in some cases they should be related to the perturbative regime of the gauge theory. Our Research Project will prov ide the Applicant with a complete and solid training in High Energy Theoretical Physics, since it intrinsically relates several key aspects of current research such as gauge theories, String Theory, gravity and the holographic principle. All of these topic s are at the frontier of current research in High Energy Physics, and understanding them is necessary for studying the most important and fundamental open questions in this field.
