Genetic susceptibility for type 2 diabetes and obesity among immigrants in Europe - prevention and treatment

Obiettivo

Immigrants in Western Europe have the highest prevalences of Type 2 Diabetes Melitus (T2DM) in the world, particularly those from the South-Asian countries after Pima Indians. This is a challenge to prevention and treatment in Europe today. Communities undergoing transitory lifestyle offer an ideal opportunity to study the patterns of genetics and its complex interplay with the lifestyles that may explain the increasing prevalence of obesity and T2DM in Europe and the rest of the world today. Obesity and T2DM may have some common genetic traits and endocrinological features but the pathophysiology responsible for the development of T2DM is yet to be established. The thrifty phenotype hypothesis introduced by Hales and Barker in 1992, may explain at least in part the increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes among immigrants in Europe, to-day. The understanding of the etiology and mechanism causing increased hyperglycaemia in this population will provide clues to more effective treatment and prevention of diabetes and obesity among immigrants. Furthermore, the information may help in understanding the T2DM in other populations, and thereby methods of treatment and prevention in general. But there is a need to organize cohesive efforts from various specialties of obesity and T2DM in genetics, bioinformatics, cell biology, clinical medicine, epidemiology, and prevention. Three Workshops will address genetics, epidemiology, prevention and treatment of obesity and T2DM. Reports from the Workshops and review articles will be made in order to present today's knowledge, and to identify needs for future research. Two Training Courses for new researchers and one International Conference will be held to summarise the comprehension of the acquired knowledge for the conception of a Network in order to plan an enhanced study of genetics, lifestyle, cell biology and bioinformatics for the treatment and prevention of obesity and T2DM.
