Flexible assembly processes for the car of the third millennium

Obiettivo

The decreasing lifecycle times of car models and the increasing number of variants require from automotive industry to design and operate assembly plants and production networks that are completely flexible, capable of switching from producing one model to another to meet fluctuating and diverse demand.

A key issue in order to succeed in such diverse, complex and customer driven market-context is to produce on-demand products of high complexity, while improving quality and product-service life cycles.my-Car will develop a new paradigm in the way modern passenger cars are assembled, enabling ultimate degree of car customisation, which could, in its outmost extent, allow every customer purchasing his unique car.

This paradigm will be formed on the basis of the self-adaptive assembly plant. my-Car will further develop and integrate technologies that will facilitate the vehicle assembly process into becoming self-adaptive to any kind of market variation and capable of producing cars with extended degree of personalization. my-Car aspires at improving the ability of the automotive industry to integrate the customer into its assembly processes.

my-Car recognizes the need of developing assembly concepts that are completely flexible in all their aspects (machine/robot/floor level, system suppliers and supply chain). The implementation of the self-adaptive car factory concept will be the radical innovation of the IP.my-Car aims at increasing by 10% the market share for European automotive car industry, reducing by 15% assembly costs, shortening by 15% the time to market and decreasing investment costs by 20% by promoting assembly equipment reusability.

The IP's Consortium includes major stakeholders of the European automotive industry, namely a Core Users Group, a group of production system suppliers, a group of ICT providers, a group of SMEs and R&D performers, including Academic and Research Institutes. Volvo Technology will act as the IP's Co-ordinator.
