Damage resistant and roughness retaining work rolls for cold rolling and temper rolling

Objectif

The 'optimal work roll' for cold rolling and temper rolling depends on mill-specific factors (mill lay-out, rolling practices, product mix). A concerted approach is proposed to investigate and physically describe the evolution of roll damage, residual stresses and roll surface roughness during rolling, taking into account the synergy between roll-related and mill-specific factors.

A decision tool to tailor roll properties to the mill, including the aspect of environment protection, will be developed. Prototypes of rolls with superior properties will be developed and tested. Simultaneously, roll inspection methods and procedures will be improved to eliminate the safety risk of exploding rolls.
