Objective This project aims to provide an exemplary historical study of the political culture in a post-totalitarian society. Forgoing the political documents that are more typically the focus of such research, the project analyses contemporary audience responses to s elected post-war films, theatre and radio plays, and memoirs that dealt with the Nazi past. The study of these sources is able to shed light on the under-explored process of audience reception. At the same time, while political historians have found only wide spread silence, and thus diagnosed a general concealment of recent experiences; the historico-cultural approach reveals a broad variety of attitudes on Nazism. Therefore this interdisciplinary study allows a re-evaluation of how the Germans came to terms with their past.
