Obiettivo This experimental project combines laser and ion imaging techniques to study the dynamics of elementary reaction and photo-dissociation dynamics. Nanosecond laser pulses will be used in conjuction with molecular beams and velocity map ion imaging to study t he state-to-state reaction dynamics of some photo-initiated chemical reactions of interest in atmospheric and combustion chemistry. These experimental techniques will allow the determination of fully quantum state-resolved integral and differential cross sections at several collision energies. The chosen reactive systems (O(1D)+CH4, H+CO2 and CI+SH2,CH3SH,CH3SCH3) can be considered complex reactions involving four and more atoms whose understanding is a challenge for both experimental and theoretical modern Molecular Reaction Dynamics. The results obtained from these experiments will extend the prototypic three-atom reactions, which are well understood nowadays, to more complex systems if, in addition, dynamical calculations (mainly quasi-classical trajectory calculations) are performed on computed ab initio potential energy surfaces and detailed comparisons between theory and experiment are carried out.As a second part of this project, femtosecond laser pulses will be employed in combination with velocity ma p ion imaging to study and understand the multiple fragmentation pathways of some polyatomics molecules such as halomethanes (CH3Br, CH2CI2, CH2CIBr, CH2I2) and sulfur containing molecules, such as dimethylsulfide (CH3SCH3), dimethyldisulfide (CH3SSCH3) an d dimethylsulfoxide (CH3SOCH3). In all cases, several neutral and ionic fragmentation channels are possible. Femtosecond velocity map imaging represents an excellent tool to unravel these multiple fragmentation pathways, thus understanding the complex photochemistry of these molecules.
