Charge conjugation and parity violation in beauty Physics

Objectif

A large experimental effort at SLAC (BaBar Collaboration) and KEK (Belle Collaboration) is devoted to measurements on beauty B meson decays. These data are presently used to test the Standard Model of weak interactions. They allow to explore charge conjugation (C) and parity (P) violation and to determine accurately the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements. This proposal is to examine hadronic B meson decays to fix as precisely as possible the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model. Some hint of physics beyond the Standard Model might result from this research work. A beauty B meson is a heavy bottom quark b (mass m_b) bound with a light quark by the strong interaction in a colorless object. Its study involves non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamic s (QCD). To probe accurately CP violating processes, these QCD aspects need to be controlled. Existing data on two-body hadronic B decays are fitted using a rigorous QCD factorisation formula based on the fact that m_b is much greater than the QCD scale La mbda_QCD. These QCD factorisation fits are particularly sensitive to input assumptions on quark distribution functions. The first research goal is to reduce these uncertainties.

This will be achieved using a computer program recently developed. The professional experience of the candidate on boosted quark-anti-quark meson wave functions will be crucial. A second aim is to study the importance of the non-perturbative Lambda_QCD/m_b corrections from charmed c-quark loop penguin diagrams. A last goal is to exten d the calculations to the B_s meson, in anticipation of the experimental data from LHCb at CERN. This research project is favoured by the presence of a strong experimental LPNHE team involved in B decay experiments. Such a phenomenological and theoretical study of CP violation will contribute to the present effort to deepen our knowledge of the fundamental interactions.
