Cel The RTD institutions participating in STAIRS are fully aware of their enormous innovation potential and their societal commitments, driving them to actively turn that innovation potential into added value. In order to achieve this, they have created so-cal led alliances for commercialisation at a regional level since, due to a lack of critical mass, highly specialised commercialisation entities for each individual institution cannot operate profitably. These pilot regional experiences with distinct regional commercialisation models indicate that an upgrade of these regional TT-alliances to a trans-national level linking them with equally competent partners would generate a promising platform with increased efficiency thanks to synergy effects and an enlarged critical mass.A bundling of technological excellence and commercialisation efforts driven by a public-private-partnership creates a new scenario for trans-national technology transfer and paves the way for future TTT-challenges in a competitive environment. The major objective of the STAIRS project is to enhance technology transfer from renowned European RDT institutions to the market by implementing trans-national return-on-research strategies within a TTT-model. The partners are highly committed to interlink their successful regional models to a trans-national model and optimise it thanks to an exhaustive testing on selected hands-on TT-cases.The main expected result from the STAIRS project is a ready-to-use TTT-model composed of components developed and tested during the project. Due to a large dissemination activity IRCs and other commercialisation structures will become aware of the model developed within STAIRS and get the opportunity to adapt it to their own environments. The long-term vision of this project - beyond the EC funding - is to set up and expand a sustainable trans-national TT-alliance in the field of key technologies with the participation of renowned RTD institutions across Europe.
