Objective
CREATE3S aims to develop a new generation Short Sea Shipping (SSS) vessels utilising advanced design and manufacturing techniques, enabling Europe to strengthen its shipping and shipbuilding competitiveness. A key element in CREATE3S is to separate the hydrodynamic- and cargo carrying platforms in the vessels. This approach will combine the ability for vessels to be tuned to specific trades while, at the same time, having competitive operational and building cost. By applying advanced manufacturing techniques in an ?industrial? fabrication of large series of standardized basic modules, the aim is to reduce manufacturing costs by 30 ?40% and production lead-times by more than 25%. The new modular concept will be applied to handle: intermodal load units, dry b ulk transport and liquid cargo (chemicals, gas tankers). Several module alternatives will be evaluated (examples are: enabling the complete load of cargo to be shifted in one move; making midlife conversion of vessels very competitive). A common denominator is that the modules will be optimised for ?industrial mass production?. Safety and sustainability are investigated and accommodated through a comprehensive risk assessment and integration of solutions that facilitate reduced energy consumption, emissions , and waste. The new generation vessels for SSS will be assessed on their operational and ecological performance in relation to total cost of ownership (including production cost) utilising advanced design and exploitation simulation techniques. This proje ct will be carried out by a competitive consortium that comprises linking participants from the relevant EU countries and sectors of the cluster: shipping companies, port terminals, shipyards, suppliers and RTD institutions.
