Training in theoretical Physics

Objective

A programme for students in theoretical physics will be established, covering areas in which the CERN Theoretical Physics Division has expertise, including cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, string theory, quantum gravity, and field theory, as well as particle physics and relativistic heavy-ion physics.

This programme will be directed at students on detachment from home universities, from less-favoured European countries in particular, providing them with unique new training opportunities in research topics that might be unavailable in their home universities.

The admission of selected students will be subject to a formal agreement with a supervisor at the home university where the students remain affiliated, who agrees on a well-defined research topic wit h an expert local supervisor at CERN who commits to support the student's work during a stay of about one year.

The student will return to his/her home university for the writing up, presentation and defence of his/her Ph.D. thesis. CERN will provide the students with office space and infrastructure support including library and network access, regular student seminars, postgraduate lecture courses, and free access to CERN's seminars, colloquia and lectures.

The programme proposed is extremely interdisciplinary, bringing together aspects of cosmology and particle physics, using tools from mathematical physics, field theory and string theory.

The CERN Theoretical Physics Division offers a unique scientific melting-pot where theoretical physicists from a large n umber of institutions in many countries work together, each bringing their own specific approach to common research problems.

While at CERN, the students will also become familiar with aspects of experimental physics such as the upcoming LHC programme, and the student's home universities will benefit from closer links with a leading research institution.
