Molecular networks at phase Boundaries

Objetivo

The Early Stage Researcher Training network is concerned with providing young researchers with a multidisciplinary education in nanoscience. In each case the education will lead to a PhD-degree in physics or chemistry. The research project focuses on surface molecular networks (SMNs) at the solid/liquid and solid/gas phase boundaries. SMNs can be used for a deliberate functionalisation of surfaces towards the exhibition of desired properties and functionalities by adsorption of ordered molecular networks.

In order to give a full account of the properties and mode of operation of such surfaces an atomic-level understanding is required. In particular, one has to develop an atomic-scale view of such surfaces in the presence of a high-pressure gas or a liquid, before the target-oriented use of SMNs in nanotechnological applications will be viable. The young researchers will be trained in a variety of theoretical and experimental methods that have been developed to result in such an atomic-scale understanding of surfaces, and which presently are being modified as to encompass the presence of a high pressure or liquid phase instead of vacuum only.

The training aims at conveying a large number of skills to the trainees, including the application of a variety of experimental and/or theoretical surface science techniques, instrumental development, scientific writing, and complementary skills such as presentation techniques and entrepreneurship-related abilities. The network will also put an additional emphasis on societal issues in nanoscience by virtue of an introductory workshop. The programme uses a co-ordinated approach as to ensure a thorough, multi-disciplinary education of the students. To this end, all Early Stage Researchers projects will be multidisciplinary in nature, and shorter and longer-term research visits at the other Contractor sites are compulsory, and a common workshop and course programme is included in the network co-ordination.
