Objectif One of the major challenges in the life sciences is to fully apprehend the complexity of the brain in functional terms, as well as to unravel causes of brain diseases (e.g. Parkinson's, mood disorders). Because brain diseases are common, they have a huge impact on quality of life and the individual's socio-economic prospect. Research into genetical and environmental causes of brain disease is becoming more important given the increasing age of the European population. The completed sequences of various genomes and the advent of new technologies collectively named functional genomics, make it possible to investigate underlying mechanisms of brain (dys)-function using novel multidisciplinary functional analyses of genes and proteins. These biomedical advances are a challenge for future researchers and require extensive knowledge of various aspects of genetics, genomics, brain physiology and neural disease. As such, research training should be accordingly, i.e. directed at problem solving and integrating information from various backgrounds. The host, the Centre for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research, has assembled top quality research teams from various neurosciences disciplines with a wide range of complementary expertise. In this science-oriented atmosphere the Centre provides high-level education (specialized scientific training, general skills) that is complemented by the infrastructure of the Graduate School Neurosciences Amsterdam. The key objectives of this Marie Curie Neuromics EST are:1) to train ear ly stage researchers in state-of-the-art functional neurogenomics, in a unique environment with superb genomics and physiology expertise and facilities.2) To train early stage researchers in designing research strategies to tackle complex and multi-layered questions.Together, we aim to deliver researchers with first-class career opportunities and with the prospect to become leaders in European neuroscience research either in academia or industry.
