International, interdisciplinary PhD-program of the Centre for Systems Neuroscience Hannover (ZSN)

Obiettivo

Neuroscience has become the leading biomedical research field in this century. In this rapidly evolving field it is important to stress a multidisciplinary, systemic approach in order to develop therapies for neurological and mental disorders of great public interest. There is a fundamental lack of suchlike trained neuroscientists in Europe today. The Centre for Systems Neuroscience (ZSN) Hannover, established by the Hannover Medical School, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, the Hannover University and Hannover University of Music and Theatre, focuses on multidisciplinary systems neuroscience to strengthen overlapping areas of basic and clinical research.

The ZSN covers all modern methods in basic and clinical research including highly innovative techniques. Cooperating veterinarians have great expertise concerning genetic mutations in animals serving as animal models for human diseases. Its interdisciplinary approach has proven to be a promising way to strike at the root of neurological disorders and to analyse complex systems functions and their restoration. The ZSN uses its rewarding platform to provide highly needed PhD-training for outstanding graduates of relevant life sciences disciplines or subjects.

In the 3-year-program PhD-students will gain broad neuro-scientific knowledge from bench to bedside and develop valuable complementary skills. Since the risk of premature specialization and the loss of interdisciplinary approaches is particularly acute in neuroscience, the project meets the needs to prepare early stage scientists for future tasks in this research field of vital significance for public health and the European competitiveness concerning research and economy. The project will provide 10 fellows with scientific and complementary s kills needed to pursuit a successful scientific career. It will slow down the "brain drain" from the EU to the US and help develop standards for PhD-training in Europe.
