Decay of correlations, statistical properties of uniformly, non-uniformly and partially hyperbolic dynamical systems

Cel

The aim of this proposal is to study decay of correlations, i.e. the rate at which dynamical systems approach their equilibrium. This is a central problem in dynamical systems and statistical physics and is important in a number of related problems for the study of physical models (from the arrow of time to astrophysics).

This involves using mathematical techniques based on the Fourier transform of the correlation function. Pollicott was once of the original architects of this approach, along with Ruelle. This theory has undergone remarkable advances in the past five years for the model systems of hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and flows (e.g. geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds).

There is still work to be done and scope to extend this to partially hyperbolic systems (such as frame flows and skew products). Perhaps the most challenging development would be to extend this to some non-uniformly hyperbolic systems. This would be the most general context - although at this level of generality many additional restrictions on the system might be needed. Closely related to this analysis would be work on dimension of attractors and Lyapunov exponents and other dynamical invariants.

This is quickly developing area, and there is great scope for further fundamental advances. An integral part of the proposal is that the chair would be active in developing research in this area through the supervision of students, mentoring of junior staff and through suitable lecturing and teaching of advanced courses.

The Centro do Matematica Aplicada and the wider university has considerable potential to benefit, including a large pool of talented young mathematicans and scientists.
