Objective
The objective of this proposal for is to contribute to strengthen scientific collaboration between European and Mexican scientist working on air pollution. Dr. L. G. Ruiz-Suárez, the applicant to the fellowship is a leading atmospheric chemist in Mexico. There, he is the leader of one of the most active research groups on this subject.
His group pioneered work in Mexico on photochemical reactivity and air quality modeling, biogenic VOC emissions and inventories, trace compound analysis in gas phase and particulate matter and GHG emission factors and emission inventories. He proposes to spend a 18 months leave at two top leading European Research facilities.
The host site would be CEAM, where Dr. Ruiz-Suárez will test, with EUPHORE data, a SOA model that streamlines calculations. It assumes that the phase distribution of an organic compound can be considered as that compound dissolving at infinite dilution into one pseudo solvent in the suspended phase. The molar properties of that pseudo solvent are the weighted average of all other known compounds in the phase.
This approach is iteratively applied to all of those compounds, extracting and replacing them, one at the time. The model his being tested with traditional smog chamber experimental data found in the literature with encouraging results. To learn about state of the art biogenic VOC emission measurements with Dr. R Steinbrecher from IMK-IFU he will join a fieldwork in an EUROFLUX site "Tharandter Wald".
This continuos flux site over sprucees representative of a forest area of about 60 sqr. km in the eastern Erzgbirge, about 10 km SW of the city of Dresden/Saxony. This site is used for validation of airborne measurements over complex terrain. Dr. Ruiz will learn about and explore the adaptability of the sampling and analysis techniques to Mexico.
Also, he will use his stay at IMK-IFU to learn more about MCCM most updated version. In relation to this, Dr. Ruiz group is the most active user of MCCM in Mexico.
