Multi-modal biomedical imaging for research and clinical application

Objetivo

Integrated Early Stage Training is offered in the fast growing field of biomedical imaging for medical research and clinical applications. The integrated use of modern imaging modalities is extremely important for non-invasive studies focusing on elucidation of functional and metabolic processes with high spatial resolution in major diseases (eg, cancer or diabetes).

The optimised use of those modern imaging techniques in a clinical environment leads to improved individual diagnosis and improved local treatment strategies, often by image-guided minimally invasive surgery or conformal radiation therapy. The quality of research and clinical use, but also industrial development of new innovative products for the world market are hampered by the tremendous lack of well educated medical physicists with sufficient knowledge in imaging systems and their applications in most European countries (EFOMP survey). Rapidly increasing medical and economical costs will result from insufficient diagnostics.

The proposed concept provides excellent theoretical and practical training for early-stage researchers in all important imaging modalities with contributions from research institutions with focus on magnetic resonance imaging/spectroscopy, modern computed tomography combine d with positron emission tomography (2 Research Sections in the Clinic for Radiology), magnetoencephalography (MEG Center) and conformal radiation therapy (Department for Medical Physics). All institutions work closely together and are embedded in the large university hospital of the University of Tubingen allowing insight not only in basic methodical research, but in the organization and realization of patient studies as well.

All institutions are well experienced in theoretical and practical training of local physics and medical students, in the very successful former Marie Curie Training Center on "Conformal Radiation Therapy" (FP5), and in our international post graduate training programme in neurosciences.
