Evolutionary probabilistic circuit design

Obiettivo

Circuit design is a complex problem due to huge design space dimensions. Effective search in large complex spaces is requiring smart tools. The application of evolutionary algorithms for circuit design seems to be the most attractive approach, which allows us to obtain novel circuit solutions. Many positive results have been published. However, the choice of the best structure of evolutionary design is unclear till now. Our proposal will concentrate on leading edge evolutionary probabilistic circuit design techniques. They have recently attracted renewed interest of circuit designers because of its potentially important contribution to advanced EDA. The current project is expected to generate innovative contributions to both EDA and evolvable hardware. The project aims are an investigation of new approaches to increasing effectiveness of EDA tools. The principal research objective of the project is evolutionary circuit design by means of probabilistic evolutionary models. The novelty of our approach lies in the explicit incorporation of the probabilistic models into the circuit design. The general idea is that probabilistic models are able to accumulate design information about suitable building blocks, as for analogue circuits like phase-shifters, filters, PL L, when approaching analogue signal processing. It is expected that exploitation of evolutionary circuit design software will substantially improve circuit design. The proposal offers the potential to increase the market lead of European technology users, b y enabling them to offer better software capable of doing more effective computer aided circuit design. The market in computer aided circuit design exists and is buoyant. The evolutionary design techniques are `off-the-shelf¿ in the sense of being known and applied in other industries. They do not require equipment beyond a PC to run and so will not add significantly to the production costs of circuits designed, so this is essentially a low cost technology.
