Disorders and coherence of the embodied self

Objectif

DISCOS is an interdisciplinary project of both the biomedical sciences and the humanities to investigate the fundaments of the human person. 9 European centres with outstanding expertise in the area of neurosciences, neuropsychiatry, philosophy and psychology will cooperate in research and training on "Disorders and Coherence of the Embodied Self", a topic of central importance for European societies for the following reasons:
(1) In neuropsychiatric and psychosocial medicine, disorders of self-coherence constitute a severe burden of disease that affects an estimated quarter of the population in their lifetime.
(2) Progress in neuroscience calls for a redefinition of the traditional concepts of self, identity and person. The notion of the self has recently been questioned by neuroscientists as being only an illusionary construct of the brain. This challenges the foundations of central legal and political institutions of society.
(3) The growing acceleration of changes in a globalized society undermines the formation of coherent identities and leads to disorientation, estrangement and fragmentation of the self. These developments amount to a crisis of the self, with far-reaching implications for medicine and society.

DISCOS will react to this crisis:
(1) on the scientific level, by developing a multi-level, coherent framework model of the embodied human self and its disorders
(2) on the educational level, by training young European researchers in core and integrative approaches to the self
(3) on the societal level, by exploring the ethical implications of different approaches to the self, and by developing guidelines for the integrated treatment of disorders of the self.

The major breakthrough to be expected from DISCOS will be the first integrated framework of the self and its disorders from both the biomedical sciences and the humanities. This framework will offer a pragmatically relevant answer to the crisis of the self in current societies.
