Looking for the neural basis of human consciousness through levels of awareness

Objective

In recent years there has been an explosion of scientific work on consciousness, in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and other fields. Only a few research groups have addressed questions related to awareness on subjects in different states of consciousness such as sleep, sedation or comatose state. Several studies showed partially preserved cognitive functions in pathologies of consciousness but presently there is no validated objective consciousness meter that can be used as proof or disproof of awareness in severely brain-damaged patients. We will use EEG, MEG and fMRI and behavioural measures: a) to determine which cognitive processes in the intention to move domain can be reach by different levels of awareness; b) to characterize the neurocognitive signatures for the intention-to-action in different pathologies of consciousness. The applicant and the host institution provide complementary skills for this project. While the applicant has expertise in behavioural neurology and neurobiology, the host institution will provide the skills in neuroimaging, neurophysiology and cognitive psychology. In this respect both the applicant and the host institution will benefit from the fellowship.
