Cel The objective of this project was to develop methods and tools for the design of open, highly integrated production management systems for the purpose of supporting the improvement of existing systems as well as the design of new ones. The target domain was small batch, flexible, discrete manufacturing. The target domain was small batch, flexible, discrete manufacturing. An integrated method for the analysis and design of advanced manufacturing systems (GIM) has been produced. A detailed user manual, including an application of the GIM method, has been provided, and computerized tools for the support of the method have been specified. An open, integrated architecture with multi-level planning and scheduling, providing predictive and dynamic production management and control, has been constructed. Implementation models, consistent with the International Standards Organisation open systems interconnection (ISO-OSI) model and relevant international standards, have been provided for the shop and cell manager, and the principles for the communication and control of work stations have been specified in detail. A shop scheduler prototype has been developed, pioneering knowledge based facilities for dynamic finite capacity schedule evaluation, improvement and repair. A cell scheduler prototype has also been developed, featuring dynamic, finite capacity planning and scheduling using a hierarchical procedural network for the stepwise refined schedule.The project has produced the following results: -The GIM Method, an integrated method for the analysis and design of advanced manufacturing systems. Exploitation Intermediate project results have been implemented on internal and external CIM projects, such as the design by PROCOS of a sophisticated CIM system for the Danish meat processing company TULIP. The exploited results comprise -the generic CAM architecture, comprising shop- and cell-level Manufacturing Management and Control System (MMCS) functions -the prototype shop-level planning and scheduling system, based on AI, DB and simulation techniques -methods and tools for the definition and specification of industrial CIM organisation and layout.
