Objectif The aim of REDO is to assist software engineers in the maintenance, restructuring and validation of large software systems and their transportation between different environments. The objective is to articulate a theoretical framework for doing this and to develop the requisite methods and prototype tools. The aim of the maintenance validation and documentation of software systems (REDO) project is to facilitate efficient, high quality software maintenance. This can only be conducted if well structured documentation relating to the software is available. The project is therefore developing abstraction recovery (reverse engineering) methods and tools to permit the regeneration of such documentation from the software, including design specifications. Maintenance can then be performed at a high specification level.Restructuring (reengineering) tools will also be developed to optimise software structure and hence to improve the efficiency of the maintenance process. An optimised software structure is also an essential precursor to the use of reverse engineering tools. The aim of the project is to assist software engineers in the maintenance, restructuring and validation of large software system and their transportation between different environments. Theobjective is to articulate a theorectical framework for doing this and to develop the requisite methods and prototype tools. The approach taken is to integrate artificial intelligence techniques with current developments in the field of formal methods, software engineering, software validation and human factors. The work is structured as follows:problem definition;domain specific prototype applications;research and development in maintenance and validation;the application of knowledge based systems;toolkit construction and integration;evaluation. The focus has so far been on reverse engineering, and 2 approaches have been taken. 1 is pragmatic, relying on structured query language (SQL) as an interface to a database repository of the data required in the reverse engineering process. The other relies on a fine grain object oriented repository with associated schema descriptions. An intermediate language has been designed with business applications in mind, and progress has been made on user interface issues. A handbook on reverse engineering, of interest to software maintainers, has been produced. The approach taken is to integrate artificial intelligence techniques with current developments in the field of formal methods, software engineering, software validation and human factors. The work is structured as follows: - problem definition - domain-specific prototype applications - research and development in maintenance and validation - the application of knowledge-based systems - toolkit construction and integration - evaluation.
