Advanced international training courses in health risk assessment

Objective

Implementation of reliable and efficient risk assessment procedures for the exposure to various types of chemicals is of high concern in Europe today. The number of chemicals in use is increasing and for many of the chemicals little knowledge is available on possible health risks. EU has placed food and drug safety and safe handling of chemicals as a high priority, as exemplified by REACH, the new legislation on chemicals. To meet these needs and interests in EU, there is an increasing need for well-educated experts in health risk assessment procedures, who can provide the European public with reliable risk assessment of the adverse health effects of chemicals. However, in Europe today, no comprehensive and systematic training in risk assessment exists at the advanced level of PhD students and post docs.

The overall objective of RA-COURSES is to provide a coherent European course programme in health risk assessment for high-quality training by international experts of PhD students and post docs, who will be responsible for a future safe management of chemicals in Europe. The programme includes 10 courses and provides a comprehensive training covering all aspects needed for future scientists and professionals in European health risk assessment. The courses are developed by international experts with extensive research experience and will emphasise active learning, contact building and networking.

Tailor-made educational material and examinations will strengthen the learning process. RA-COURSES will result in:
1) well-trained experts in risk assessment for European universities, authorities and industry, who will provide the European consumers with reliable risk assessment of the adverse effects of exposure to chemicals;
2) integration of European universities into a academic infrastructure in the risk assessment knowledge areas;
3) a scientific platform for development and harmonisation of risk assessment procedures in Europe.
