Objective Cardiovascular disease (CVD) generates a massive burden of disease and death in Europe. The majority of CVD cases are preventable. Planners, policy makers and professionals are increasingly using epidemiological/policy models to explain past trends, and address the future CVD epidemic. A variety of CVD policy models exist, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. These include IMPACT, RIVM CDM, SPPM, BET-CI, MSLT and Prevent. However, most modelling groups are working independently. There is now a powerful need for a pan-European collaboration to bring these researchers together to:a) learn more about each other's work;b) train future CVD researchers; andc) work together to produce the best possible European model. This project therefore aims to strengthen the links between the existing groups. To help build this network, a series of training courses will be organised in the participating EU countries. This will be supported by the lead participants based in Dublin and Liverpool. The training will be based on the proven principles of adult learning: focussed, structured, interactive and participative sessions involving small groups, brief lectures, workshops and practical "hands-on" computer sessions. The courses will pursue a coherent syllabus covering key themes. The young researchers will thus benefit from the experience of leading experts. Event participants will also gain a variety of complementary skills during their personalized training. Female researchers will be given priority. There will be wide publicity and benefits for the participants and host institutes. The collaboration and shared partnerships will help to harness the information technology, remove boundaries and build bridges to maximise health intelligence. This networking and training will thus help to build the collaborative framework necessary to develop and submit a subsequent bid for EU funding to develop a unified European CVD policy model.
