Objective The goal of this project is to develop a spectroscopic technique to detect precancerous in real time, non-invasively employing elastic light scattering spectroscopy. The system will consist of a white light spectrometer and optical fiber probe. An array of single optical fiber probes will be used to carry light to the tissue, and from the tissue to the spectrometer. The probe is sensitive to the size of the scatters in a turbid medium. Since most of the light in the visible spectrum scatters from cells and nuclei membrane in the tissue, the spectrum should be sensitive to the morphological alteration of the cells. Therefore, we expect to see correlations between the spectra and the cells¿ morphology in differentiation of cancerous cells from normal cells. The experiments will be performed by taking spectra from normal and cancerous cells of the human melanoma cell lines, human tongue squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, and human cervical cancer cell lines. After obtaining consistent correlations between the cells' morphology and the spectra, in vivo experiments will be performed on animal models.
