Triggering and synchronization of seismic/acoustic events by weak external forcing as a sign of approaching the critical point

Objective

The Earth is embedded in the oscillating fields of different origin with extremely wide range of frequencies, from seconds to months and years. As the oscillating objects are not isolated from the Earth environment, they produce the rhythms in the stress/strain fields in the Earth's crust expressed in phenomena of synchronization and triggering. The sensitivity to weak external forcing implies that the affected system is close to the critical state, where the equilibrium state can be easily violated. Recent development in the field of modern non-linear dynamics allows quantitative interpretation of many of these unconditional effects.

The objectives of project are:
- Developing quantitative methods of discovering and assessing the strength of synchronization or probability of triggering of seismic/acoustic activity by a weak (periodic/pulse) external forcing.
- Analysing the periodic component existence using the micro-seismic data before strong earthquakes.
- Analysing seismic data at reservoir area and other active regions using modern methods of non-linear dynamics and synchronization theory.
- Assembling experimental stick-slip setup, which will enable recording of displacements, acoustic emission during slips as well as synchronizing mechanical or electromagnetic signal.
- Analysing acoustic emission data generated during laboratory stick-slip experiments using modern methods of non-linear dynamics and synchronization theory.
- Studying precursory processes and thermodynamics and statistics of faulting/fracture processes.

The research program consists of the tasks listed below:
- Testing the existing ones and developing new quantitative tools for discovering and assessing the strength of synchronization/probability of triggering of seismic activity and acoustic emission by weak external periodic/pulse-like impact.
- Analysis of different experimental time series: seismic catalogues, micro-seisms, tidal potential, acoustics during laboratory experiments on stick-slip and fracture, seismic time series at large reservoirs will be processed using modern techniques for quantifying the strength of synchronization and ordering in coupled time series.
- Analysis of dependence of synchronization strength on the proximity to the critical state and search for periodical components at various stages of fracture and stick-slip both in laboratory and field conditions.
- Development of a non-linear interaction theory, earthquake thermodynamics and statistics to analyse relations between fault processes and observed seismic fields.
- Compilation of recommendations for implementation of non-linear dynamics/synchronization technique into seismological practice.

Application of seismic and laboratory acoustic time series may reveal new regularities and lead to introduction of new characteristics of seismic process. Understanding of nature of seismic synchronization may give the new tool for prediction of impending strong event.
