Objective
This project is devoted to the development of test suites for the EGEE-II SA3 middleware certification, in particular in purposes of the LHC Computing Grid project. The certification is aimed to verify that the middleware handed over for deployment provides all the functionality advertised and is reliable, robust, scalable, usable and deployable. The test suites used in the certification process have to enable comprehensive and effective testing of all middleware components and their co-existence and inter-operation. Several test-beds will be used to certify the middleware distribution on the supported set of operating systems. Beside the development of test suites needed for certification the development of tests used to catch certain software problems during middleware certification. Existing test suites will be ported to the current EGEE-II middleware, in particular the EDG-TSTG framework. Four Russian teams (JINR in Dubna, IHEP in Protvino, PNPI in St-Petersburg region, and SINP MSU in Moscow), being basic institutions in the Russian LHC Regional Center activity (Russian Data Intensive Grid - RDIG), and two European teams, CERN IT (Geneva, Switzerland), and IFAE PIC (Barcelona, Spain), being two of the major participants in the LHC Computing GRID project and the EGEE-II SA3 activity, have decided to join efforts to get the main goal of this proposal. The research is to cover important technological stage on the way of new middleware deployment in large scale Grid infrastructures. The research planned will be based on the experience of the teams in developing the LCG and EGEE middleware test suites since 2003. Beside this Russian teams actively participated in evaluation of MW since 2003, in particular Globus Toolkit versions 3 and 4, and OMII, what included development and carrying out of functionality, stress, performance and reliability tests and thus build sources of experience needed for the project. A specialized test bed will be created and supported by JINR and IHEP teams to provide an additional platform for development of test suites, and also to ease the involvement of students in the project. The close collaboration with EGEE-II SA3 and LCG working groups at CERN and IFAE PIC is assumed for the coordination of the work process in order that full and comprehensive test suites can be built for the EGEE-II SA3 MW certification, avoiding duplication of efforts and ensuring complete coverage of issues. The experience obtained by Russian teams in this joint project will serve also as a basis to start the activity on the developing new middleware in Russia in purposes of national Grid projects and for their integration in international activity. In particular, one of the goals is to provide deep integration of Russian Data Intensive Grid as a LCG Tier2 Cluster under creation now, into the LCG infrastructure and, eventually, for provision of full-scale participation of Russian scientists in the LHC experiment.
