Linear accelerators for the synchrotron injection of Megawatt proton- and heavy ion-Beams for the facility for antiproton and ion research (FAIR)

Obiettivo

For the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at Darmstadt the GSI heavy ion high current linear accelerator UNILAC is foreseen to serve as an U28+ injector for the synchrotron SIS 18. In the past, different hardware measures and careful tuning in all sections of the UNILAC resulted in an increase of the uranium beam intensity up to 4.6 emA. Nevertheless requirements of the FAIR are even higher (15 emA). Further upgrades, including a new front-end system, an upgrade of the DTL, optimized beam matching to the Alvarez-DTL and an improved transport to the SIS 18 are necessary. The antiproton physics program for FAIR is based on a rate of 7xE10 cooled antiprotons per hour. To provide a sufficient primary proton intensities a new proton linac is planned, which will be operated independently from the existing GSI heavy ion UNILAC. The proposed linac comprises a proton source, an RFQ, and a CH-DTL. Its operation frequency of 352 MHz allows for an efficient acceleration to up to 70 MeV using normal conducting Crossed-bar H-cavities. The beam pulses with a length of < 25 µs, a current of 70 mA, and total transverse emittances of 7 µm will allow to fill the existing synchrotron SIS 18 within one multi-turn-injection up to its space charge limit of 7xE12 protons. The proposed research programme is a continuation of the ongoing INTAS project 03-54-3543 with participation of GSI, ITEP, IAP, UNIBO, and KIPT, to be ended in November 2006.
