Objective This research has been on the modelling and implementation of the backscattering module, the wind wave module and the integration of the modules in a consistent model-VIERS-1. Several recently developed theories on backscattering from slightly rough surfaces were compared using results from the measurement campaigns. An improved 2-scale model was selected for implementation in the final model. Similarly the approximations used in the wind wave model have tested with the data and the module was finalized. The modular structure of the VIERS model permits interchange of backscattering modules and wind wave modules. A new wave measuring instrument, the reflective stereo slope gauge, was tested for the first time in open sea.
