Objectif In order to improve the efficiency of organic microelectronic devices, there has to be a better understanding of both the connection between the crystalline structure and device performance, and the role that the organic/organic and inorganic/organic interfaces play in determining that structure. The main objective of the proposed research project is understanding the role of structure in solar cell efficiency and using control of that structure to produce a device with improved efficiency. In order to reach that goal, the work is aimed at establishing the structure of LiF on the surface of an ordered organic thin film, exploring the impact of deposition of LiF on the order of the underlying organic molecule, and relating any changes in structure near the interface to device performance. The intention would be to produce a small molecule solar cell with improved power efficiency achieved by modification of the organic/inorganic interfacial order.
