Objetivo Both nationally and internationally, women are seriously underrepresented in physics and in fields, such as engineering, for which physics knowledge is a prerequisite. Such under-representation is not only an issue of 'equal opportunities'. It has broad implications for industries and research laboratories with a strong need for a technically educated workforce. The lack of diversity in the talent pool represents an handicap also for academia. We propose to organize an International Conference on Women in Physics to gain understanding of the phenomenon from a comparative analysis of data, discuss barriers, share success stories, propose ways to improve participation, and help participants develop strategies to improve the status of women in physics in their home countries.
