Objective The objective of the MASS project is to develop an integrated environment for the analysis and simulation of microsystems and of microstructure devices and components in order to facilitate rapid product development.MASS will include aspects of microsystems engineering such as stress and displacement analysis, fracture and crack propagation, heat transfer, fluid flow and dynamic behaviour. Automatic adaptive techniques for the construction of near optimal computational models will be used at each stage to ensure the system is rapid and easy to use. New boundary element technology will be used to simplify the modelling. The MASS functions will be integrated into an analysis and simulation package, which will be interfaced to existing CAD, EDA and CAE tools. Microstructures will be fabricated for demonstration and evaluation. The system will be installed at the plant of a pilot customer who designs and manufactures microsystems. The results will be incorporated in products marketed by vendor consortium members.
