Architecture, Methodology and Tools for Computer-Integrated Large-Scale Engineering

Objetivo

The objective of the ATLAS project is to demonstrate the application of advanced integrated IT systems in the conduct of large-scale engineering (LSE) projects. ATLAS will provide a common open platform for the IT tools used by the wide range of large and small businesses involved in large-scale engineering, together with a means of integrating the diverse specialist application tools which already exist. Appropriate degrees of information granularity will be provided for the different needs of the system users, including designers, constructors, suppliers and clients.

The approach is to develop an LSE Project Reference Model for information exchange between LSE application tools comprising LSE project type model and two specialised type models for process plant and building. The reference models will be extended to include representation of knowledge-bases and incorporated into an open LSE application platform. 2-D modelling and drafting, 3-D modelling, structural analysis and analysis and project administrative applications such as planning and cost estimation will be enhanced to allow their integration into the LSE application platform and to exchange data. Available knowledge-based systems - for example, for the application of regulations - will also be integrated into the system. The application platform will use meta-information and be based on a data and a document-handling system supporting configuration control and engineering process control. It will support configuration control and engineering process control, and equipped with pre- and post-processors for handling STEP files, and provide an import/export facility for EDIFACT messages.

A pilot demonstration based on real project information will be undertaken using test-beds installed at the end user sites. The reference models will be offered to ISO as resource contributions in the development of Application Protocols in STEP.

The results will be applicable throughout the LSE industry, and particularly to civil engineering and the construction of buildings, and process plants. The application platform enhanced application tools will be marketed commercially by the appropriate vendor and research partners in the consortium.
