Objetivo Organisational structures are changing rapidly in response to economic, social and technological developments. These structural changes are reflected in a growing demand for integrated and secure information systems that maximise their potential across communication and information services, complex applications and large distributed systems. IDSM addresses this demand, and aims to provide an overall framework and architecture for managing networks, systems and applications in a decentralised fashion, which is well suited for complex, distributed systems with several administrators and numerous heterogeneous nodes. ISDM will go beyond traditional approaches by providing a systematic solution to the overall management task. This will be achieved in collaboration with the parallel SYSMAN (7026) project. The planned solution will be based on the concepts of "domains" and "policies". Domains allow the partitioning of complex entities into sub-entities, which are each managed according to one or more specific policies. Interactive, automatic, flexible management modes will be supported in each domain. The validity of the architecture will be demonstrated on a pilot site provided by PTT Nederland. The prototype constitutes an application in the area of telecommunications and office automation and aims to manage an X400 application; it will be compliant with standards (such as ISO/ODP). The compliance of the IDSM solution with the pilot user requirements will be demonstrated. Liaison with other projects will allow the demonstration of the IDSM technology in other application areas. The IDSM partners are committed to the industrialisation of the project's results, and will endeavour to ensure that developments in IDSM are compatible with their market strategies and capable of integration into their product lines.
