Multimedia Information Presentation System

Obiettivo

The MIPS project aims to help users tackle information overload when accessing multimedia databases.

It will specify and implement a toolset based on the ISO 8879 Standard Generalised Markup Language (SGML). This toolset consists of two main modules:

- a presentation and user interface module, which provides the user with intelligent support for the presentation of retrieved information in the most appropriate manner.
- an information selection and delivery module, which provides access to the various sources of information and mechanisms for navigating within and between them.

Both modules will utilise SGML data and link models in conjunction with a hypertext presentation mechanism and knowledge-bases to perform the required interactions. Interactions with the information sources will, whenever possible, use international standards such as SQL and SFQL to implement transport mechanisms.

The viability of the project will be illustrated by the application of the toolbox to a demonstrator of an intelligent tourist adviser incorporating data from a variety of different information sources in a range of different formats.

The results of the project will be clearly exploitable at a number of levels, including the components of the toolbox and the demonstrator itself. The participation of representatives from other potential application areas in the project will ensure that the toolbox will be developed in such a way that it can be applied to other potential multimedia areas (such as publishing, education and training).
