Objectif Larviculture has frequently proved to be the bottleneck in aquaculture practices due to the fragility and lack of understanding of the early life stages. Therefore research in larviculture of fish, shrimp and bivalves has always been quintessential for any progress in aquaculture activities.A first symposium was organised at the Ghent University in 1991 (Larvi '91). It was attended by more than 250 researchers, professionals and students. In 1995 Larvi '95 was organised and attended by over 300 participants, many of them for the second time. It is clear that a conference with a strict focus on larviculture but covering the wide area of relevant disciplines fulfils the effective need for an update on recent developments and an exchange of views. The objectives of the project Larvi 2001 symposium are: 1/ Present the state-of-the-art of current larviculture practices.
