Objectif The ever growing cancer burden needs a systemic and comprehensive approach in the development of National Cancer Control Programmes. We reached consensus in a closed workshop in 2000 (QLAM 2000.300.45) among the leading European cancer associations (IARC, WHO, FECS, ECL, EONS, OECI, EORTC, UICC) on the tools and networks needed which aimed towards an ideal Model for a European Cancer Control Programme. This model was enthousiastically endorsed in an open meeting (QLAM 2001.000.49) where all possible actors ranging from the health authorities to the representative patient organisations agreed to reach this goal in 2002. Five focused working parties will collaborate to present on June 26-27, 2002 a model and a manual to a representative body of European health authorities and cancer associations for final approval and a first phase implementation 2002-2006.
